Maram Essawy
Scientist/Science Communicator.
About
My Education: I received my Bachelors in Science degree in Biochemistry and my PhD in Pharmacology, both degrees from the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities.
My Research Experience: My PhD thesis work focused on using molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and pharmacology to study mammalian mechanisms of DNA damage recognition and repair. Prior to my PhD, I gained valuable experience in a lab in the Biochemistry Department studying the ability of various small-molecule compounds to modulate the RyR channel ( a calcium channel found in skeletal and cardiac muscle) and in a lab in the Medicinal Chemistry department developing assays to biochemically characterize a small molecule developed for the treatment of drug-resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
My Passion: I’m driven by the belief that science can bring about change. I’m committed to both expanding our biological knowledge at the bench and communicating science to non-scientists, equipping them with scientific principles that will help them understand the world around (and within) them.
